Belgium is known for its history and stunning architecture, and a visit to some of its most beautiful castles certainly deserves a spot on your travel wish list.

Here we share what we consider are some of the castles that really stand out to inspire you to take a historical trip of your own.

Gravensteen Castle

Gravensteen Castle, or the Castle of the Counts, is located in Ghent and parts of it date back as far as 1180. Over the years this castle has been home to a court, a prison, and a cotton factory, but it is now open as a tourist attraction where you can choose to get married or take part in one of many cultural activities hosted throughout the year.

Make sure that you visit the roof terrace for stunning views of the whole city, and take a look around the arms museum where you can discover pistols, crossbows, and daggers.

Cleydael Castle

This moated castle can be found in Aartselaar and dates back to the 14th century. Each of the castle’s four towers has a name, Fox Tower, Chapel Tower, Owl Tower, and Cat Tower, and each one is also a different shape.

Cleydael Castle has four wings and a square shaped plan, but it is its striking towers that makes this one of Belgium’s most beautiful castles.

Castle of Freÿr

If you love to explore castle gardens then you should definitely visit the Castle of Freÿr, located between Waulsort and Dinant, when you are in Belgium. With walled terrace gardens, pretty fountains, and 300 year old orange trees, you are sure to love wandering through the grounds.

There are also a number of small mazes to discover which the whole family can enjoy, and the castle itself has been named as one of Wallonia’s major heritage sites so it is definitely worth a visit.

These are just some of Belgium’s most beautiful castles and the country offers far more that are also worthy of a visit, so why not order some Belgium brochures and start planning your trip today?
