Trying new foods is one of the best things about travelling, and even destinations quite close to home have plenty of new and exciting delicacies to try. Here, we share four things to eat in Amsterdam that complete a trip to this wonderful city.
Bitterballen
Perfect for eating alongside strong Dutch beer, bitterballen are a Dutch bar snack that consist of meat and gravy which has been breaded and deep fried. These crispy, delicious meatballs can be found in many bars and cafes across Amsterdam, and are a great accompaniment to your drinks if you haven’t had time to eat dinner!
Raw herring
Possibly a daunting choice for many, raw herring has been eaten in the Netherlands for over 600 years. Known for its nutritious qualities, this salty snack is best eaten between May and July when the fish is at its sweetest. Traditionally served with onion and pickles, you can also order your raw herring on bread, which is called ‘broodje haring’. Raw herring has a soft texture, and you’ll be about to find it in herring carts across the city.
Stroopwafel
Those with a sweet tooth will love stroopwafel. This yummy treat is made up of two thin waffles which have been sandwiched together with a caramel syrup. Stroopwafel originated in Gouda, but the ones you find in Amsterdam will also be delicious! Place your stroopwafel onto a hot drink to enjoy in like the Dutch do. This makes the syrup extra gooey, and you’re guaranteed to love this snack when its warm!
Poffertjes
Another Dutch sweet treat to eat in Amsterdam are poffertjes. These small, fluffy pancakes are made from yeast and buckwheat in a special poffertjes pan, and have a light, spongy texture that is simply delicious. Bought from street vendors, poffertjes are dusted with powdered sugar, but bought in pancake houses they can be completed with a whole range of toppings.
