I was lucky enough to go to Venice as a birthday treat from my husband, although at the time he was my boyfriend and I was convinced this would be the place I got engaged…. Sadly not! I had always wanted to go to Venice as I liked the idea of how quirky the place was, plus I wanted to taste pizza & pasta in Italy!
We went to Venice for 3 nights, so a long weekend. I strongly recommend you get a private water taxi from the airport to Venice; it was pretty cool speeding across the water watching the beautiful Venice get closer and closer. The alternative is getting a shared water taxi, it is much cheaper but it looked very cramped and of course a lot slower. We arrived at our lovely hotel, right next to some very posh looking shops, and soon realised that to get everywhere you need to do a lot of walking or jump on a boat or gondola. The strangest thing was not seeing a car the whole time we were there, but it was actually very nice!
Once unpacked, I wanted to get out and explore. The best way to see all the sights was to hire a Gondola for an hour. It was just how I imagined, an Italian man dressed in black & white stripes telling us interesting facts whilst guiding us around the waters, we even got a nice sing song too!
We were staying just outside St Mark’s Square so was just a short walk away, the square was heaving at all times and full of some lovely little bars and restaurants. It seemed much more expensive to eat and drink in the square, so I would recommend finding places to eat outside of the main square. We found some lovely little places whilst exploring the small lanes; this is where you can get a real taste for Venice.
