Located off of the northwest coast of Africa, Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal and is a top holiday destination for those looking for amazing scenery, a gorgeous climate, and delicious wine.

Here we look at three reasons to visit Madeira and why this stunning location is definitely worth a

visit.

You can speed downhill in a wicker toboggan

First established as a method of transport in 1890 so that locals could travel from the hilltop village of Monte down to Funchal, wicker toboggans offer a fast and exciting option for tourists looking to do the same.

Start with a 15 minute cable car journey up the mountain where you can enjoy beautiful views of Funchal bay and the ocean, and then be guided back down in your toboggan by two men in rubber-soled boots who will ensure that your ride goes smoothly.

You can swim in coastal rock pools

The village of Porto Moniz in Madeira offers the chance for people to swim in naturally formed coastal rock pools which were created by lava and are filled with crystal clear sea water. Not only is this a fun activity but it is great for photo opportunities too!

There are plenty of amenities around the pools too, including sun loungers, changing rooms, toilets, lockers, a snack bar, and even a play area, so you can be sure that all of your needs will be met when you visit.

You can taste amazing wine

Due to its warm climate and fertile soil, Madeira has been producing its famous fortified wine for over 500 years, and as it can be either sweet or dry everyone will be able to find one that they enjoy.

There are also opportunities for vineyard tours and wine tastings, some of which can be taken free of charge, so Madeira is a fantastic holiday choice for those who love their wine!

With these three great reasons to visit Madeira we think that it is a great destination for those who enjoy wine, time by the coast, and a bit of adventure too!
