Make sure you’ve got enough space
Even if you really like the people you’re travelling with, campervans can feel very small after a long time on the road. For this reason, we suggest renting a campervan that is advertised as being for more people than you need. This way, you won’t be cramped on top of each other and will have more space for your things too.
When it comes to packing, it is advisee that you use backpacks or gym-style bags as these take up less space than suitcases which cannot be folded or stored effectively. You’ll also be able to use these bags when you head out for the day, which means one less thing to pack!
Fill your fuel tank regularly
No matter where you’re hoping to travel to during your New Zealand road trip, you’ll quickly notice that there aren’t many petrol stations around. This means that it is wise to top up your tank every time you spot one to avoid running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere. Keep this in mind when budgeting for your trip, as lots of pit stops can add up.
For this reason, you might also want to add extra minutes onto your expected journey time, as hunting around for a petrol station, or making multiple fuel stops, can delay you if you’ve got somewhere to be.
Book campsites in advance
The freedom of going on a campervan trip is one of its many benefits, but if you do know where you’re heading to, or have a campsite in mind, it’s definitely worth booking in advance as they tend to start filling up towards the end of the afternoon. There are loads of different campsites to choose from including luxury options and those with pools, so a bit of research beforehand won’t hurt!
